MCLA Students Attend State House Day

State HouseNORTH ADAMS, MA - Hundreds of students from campuses of the nine Massachusetts state colleges including Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) canvassed the State House in Boston on Tuesday, April 13, calling on state representatives and senators to continue to support the state colleges at a time of record demand. 

MCLA students Michael Obasohan, Cody Romano, Hawa Umarova, Jaynelle Bellemore, Maggie Rolla, Brandon Clinton, Kristen Banks, Amanda Borsotti, Katie Collins and Costia Karolinski all made the early morning trip to Beacon Hill to represent their fellow students and campus community. Students were escorted by MCLA President, Mary K. Grant, Vice President of Enrollment Management and External Relations, Denise Richardello, Coordinator of Marketing and Communications, Bernadette Lupo, Coordinator of Student Activities, Jennifer Craig and Admission Counselor, Gina Puc.

MCLA students met with various legislators including college alumni state legislators State Representative Paul Kujawski, State Representative Daniel Bosley and State Representative Thomas Calter.  Students also met with State Senator Benjamin Downing and State Representative Smitty Pignatelli, along with other district representatives.

Students were given the opportunity to meet and engage with legislators, explore the magnificent setting of our state government, followed by lunch at the Grand Staircase including guest speaker presentations from retiring legislative state college alumni.

MCLA students visited with state legislators to discuss the importance of the college to students and families and its vital contributions to the Commonwealth. Students relayed personal experiences and how opportunities awarded them through public higher education have benefited them.  Other topics of discussion included financial aid, student government and the gratitude for the legislative support of the Center for Science and Innovation at MCLA.

Representative Bosley was honored for his longstanding public service and dedication to the state colleges by Grant and President of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Admiral Richard Gurnon.

Massachusetts Secretary of Education, Paul Reville was also in attendance representing the governor and all of public education in Massachusetts by providing a few words of emotional support for students and encouraging them to lobby their legislatures.
