Public Invited To Join Community Day of Service on April 30
NORTH ADAMS, MA - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), Develop North Adams and the City of North Adams announce the 19th annual Community Day of Service on Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The public is invited to participate and walk-ins are welcome. Participants will gather at the MCLA Church Street Center before going throughout the community to take part in a variety of clean-up projects.
Registration and continental breakfast will begin in the basement of the MCLA Church Street Center at 10 a.m., followed by an official welcome and assignments to work teams. Volunteers will return to the Center at approximately 2 p.m. for pizza and refreshments provided by MCLA, ARAMARK, Develop North Adams and local restaurants.
According to Spencer Moser, coordinator of MCLA's Center for Service and Citizenship, this annual event began in 1992 when the College and the community at large came together to clean up and improve North Adams.
"The scope and type of projects have evolved over the years. It has become apparent that the simplest collaborations make a big difference," Moser said.
MCLA student volunteers - either as individual volunteers members of clubs, groups or athletic teams - will join local leaders, civic organizations and community volunteers including: North Adams Youth Commission, Art About Town, Northern Berkshire Community Coalition UNITY program, Boy Scout Troop 88, Berkshire Chamber of Commerce BYP, Houghton Street Community Garden, Greylock School Art Program, Members of the Brayton Hill neighborhood, Jim Wolfe and his West End Clean-up crew, Mayor Richard Alcombright, State Rep. Gail Carridi, former State Rep. Dan Bosley, city councilors, City of North Adams DPW, Allied Waste, several Develop North Adams Board members and many community individual community members.
Although many of the teams will use their own transportation, a number of the volunteers will be transported to sites in vehicles provided by North Adams Public Schools, MCLA, BerkshireRides, the City of North Adams.
MCLA wishes to thank Killian Flynn and Allied Waste, Paul Markland and the North Adams DPW, and McAndrews-King Buick GMC for the trucks and supplies to be donated for this event.
