The Berkshire Readiness Center
WEE READ BERKSHIRE COUNTY: The Berkshire Compact for Education will work together with the early childhood providers and libraries of Berkshire County and the Berkshire United Way's Early Childhood Think Tank to offer the third annual Wee Read Berkshire County in April, 2013. The event is designed to promote the importance of early childhood literacy and reading to children. The program builds upon Pittsfield's Wee Read initiative as well as early literacy programs that have been developed throughout the Berkshires. During the month of April, 2012, 1,500 copies of the book Duck on a Bike, written and illustrated by David Shannon, were distributed to children throughout Berkshire County. The book, aimed at children ages three to six, was selected by a committee of early childhood and library professionals because the storyline and illustrations will work well for public readings and events. Along with the book, we distributed a customized bookmark that has tips regarding the importance of reading to young children. In 2011, the first year that Wee Read Berkshire County was offered, 1,200 copies of Shoes by Elizabeth Winthrop were distributed.
The reading events in 2012 included the following:
StoryWalk events were held throughout Berkshire County. StoryWalk™ is an initiative that combines a fun children's story with a popular walking route and connects families to their local business community. Pages of a book are displayed in store windows and children and their families walk through town reading the story. The StoryWalk program was introduced in Montepelier, VT and was first replicated in Berkshire County by The Parent Child Home Program of Childcare of the Berkshires.
Local libraries throughout Berkshire County held reading hours.
