FREN 390: Special Topics in Francophone Studies
My research focuses on the sociolinguistics of North American French. For the past several years, I have been one of a handful of scholars investigating Franco-American French. Franco-American French is spoken by bilinguals living in New England and the state of New York. In particular my research focuses on the relationship between the structure of the language and the role that French plays within a given community. My dissertation is entitled Morphosyntactic Variation and Language Shift in two Franco-American Communities. My other areas of interest include the history of the French language, regional variation in European and North American French, romance linguistics, second language acquisition, language pedagogy, language shift and language death.
