MCLA English Majors Study Abroad

We support our English majors to do study abroad semesters across the world, and our financial aid office works to make this possible. Our students have recently traveled to and studied in places including Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico, Poland, Japan, Greece and Italy.

“MCLA faculty helped me to do a study abroad semester last year in Italy, at the Accademia Italiana in Salerna. There, I studied with students from all over the world. I had many one-on-one tutorials, so the curriculum was catered to my interests! There was always a balance between in-class work and exploration outside the classroom which made the whole experience very special. For instance, in Italian Art History, I was able to see the art works in person! I also lived with a host family where I enjoyed home-cooked meals twice a day. I did some traveling around Italy too—to Vietri, a small town along the Almalfi Coast, and also to Positano, Florence, Capri, and Rome. I was also able to spend time with a local mother who taught me of her family's recipes, including pizza, pasta, and desserts!”

Michael Lynch“Last year at MCLA, I did a study abroad semester in Athens at the American College of Greece. The environment was fantastic—a small campus on a small mountain with unbelievable views of the outskirts of Athens, plus hiking trails that lead to spots where would sit and watch the sunset while I wrote or did homework. I studied Epic Poetry, Art History, Philosophy and Modern Greek. I had the privilege of actually going to these places where these people wrote, philosophized, walked, and lived.  I traveled a lot, too—to the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounio, to the islands of Santorini, Kea, and Aegistri, as well as to Zacharos in the Peloponnese. One of the biggest highlights of my experience was being a part of the Aqua and Outdoor Club; we went on trips around Greece and this group of students came to be my community. I’ve become quite passionate about the idea of other students taking opportunities to study abroad while at MCLA. To truly understand one another, we have to do away with our prides and fears and experience everything this gorgeous world has to offer.”
