Finding Connection Through Words: Writing Associate Helps Students Discover Their Voice

September 25, 2025

For most students, the idea of sharing their writing with a peer can feel intimidating. But for Writing Associate and Teaching Assistant Mike Lynch ’26, those moments of vulnerability are where the magic happens.

"The most rewarding aspect of helping peers and students with their writing is getting to know the person that sits before me or next to me," he explains.

As both a Writing Associate in MCLA's Writing Studio and a TA for Freshman College Writing, Lynch has learned to balance different expectations while creating a welcoming space for collaboration. His approach goes beyond grammar checks and essay structure. It's about witnessing the spark when someone discovers a new idea.

Mike Lynch writes on a dry erase board"To watch someone spark an idea, to see someone thinking, to experience someone else speaking, it's an unbelievable thing to witness," he says.

The English major's journey to MCLA wasn't traditional. He transferred from Coastal Carolina University, where he studied Marine Science, after his grandmother, a North Adams State alum, suggested the move. That diverse academic background helps him connect with students from all disciplines.

"Mike is a natural teacher. His love of poetry and the outdoors, as well as his commitment to achieving excellence (and the hard work necessary to do so) make him a role model for the First Years on so many levels," says Sara Houghteling, adjunct instructor in First Year Writing.

For students hesitant about seeking writing support, Lynch offers reassuring advice: "There is absolutely no such thing as bad writing, since no writing is ever finished being written."

Outside the Writing Studio, you might find him on the slopes with Ski Club, at intramural volleyball, or outdoors writing in his travel journal, a practice inspired by studying abroad in Athens, Greece, last fall.

His message to incoming students? "Become a part of whatever it is that puts a smile on your face in terms of activities as soon as possible, because we either have it here or we're open to having you create it for others."

The Writing Studio, located on the main floor of the Freel Library, welcomes all writers and all types of writing projects. Writing Associates will collaborate with writers at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to polishing final drafts. The studio is open Monday-Friday from 12:00-1:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday from 6-9 p.m., and Sunday from 5-7 p.m. More Information
